Michael Oluwafemi Alley
Michael Femi Alley is the founder and the principal architect of The Building Practice Ltd.
He attended the prestigious Federal Government College Kaduna and is a graduate of architecture from the Federal University of Technology Minna, and also possesses a First-Class Master’s Degree in Environmental Design (M.E.D) in architecture from the University of Lagos. He is undertaking a master’s degree course in Business for Architecture and Design at IE University Madrid, Spain.
With about 20 years of in-depth experience in the field of architecture, building construction, green building design, fire safety in buildings project management and interior design, this architect has had a wide range of exposure from working with reputable architects, engineers, developers and other stakeholders in the construction industry on several notable projects.
He obtained quality and international standard architectural training from the various establishments he has worked before founding The Building Practice. Notable among these are Design Union Consulting LLC, one of the country’s renowned multi-disciplinary consulting firms where he spent over eight (8) years and rose to the position of general manager of architecture. He is a full member of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) as well as a fully registered Architect with the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON).
Michael is an International advanced Member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) with training that enables him to incorporate fire protection and precautionary measures on every project he works on. He is also very vast with the requirements of the International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Codes (IFC) which he applies in the design of all projects he undertakes and encourages strict adherence to these codes in order to produce internationally acceptable designs and buildings.
As a usual prime consultant on many projects, it became necessary for him to hone his project management skills and credentials, and so he became a certified project management professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
Michael also has a good knowledge of sustainable architecture and incorporates these techniques into his everyday architecture practice. He has taken courses with World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) Edge (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) and US Green Building Council & Green Building Certification inc. and is an Edge expert and LEED Green associate respectively. Hence, he has the relevant skills required to offer sustainable designs and developments through the promotion of water conservation, energy conservation, improved indoor air quality and consideration for embodied energy in materials.
He is also a graduate member of the Nigerian Institute of Management and has undertaken courses with the Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals and obtained professional certificates for the General Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) course and Construction safety in December 2006. A well-trained Nigerian, who has had opportunities to work and live in different geo-political zones of the country, this has enhanced his knowledge of diverse groups of the land, and hence understands English, Yoruba and Hausa languages.
